Rumor is that Canon will announce a 5D successor during or shortly before the PMA. But those rumors always spread before important fairs and everyone was talking about a 7D and even of a 40D just after the 30D hit the market.

I am seriously thinking about adding a 24-105 L to my 30D line up. My reasoning is that it will cover normal to medium on a 1.6 body and has a constant f/4 and IS as well. I love primes and was thinking about adding a 35 L to my collection but my head says that a general walkaround is a better bet in the long run considering that I could find a use for the 24-105 on a future FF body as well.

      Confused...
My main lens is a 28-108mm (35mm equivalent), I find it a great range for a general walkabout lens..just hoping for more camera bodies with in body stabilisation as that's the main feature I miss.

John, what do you use? As I don't think that Canon or Nikon are going to offer in body IS (or VR for the Nikonians) on their SLRs any time soon. AFAIK, lens based IS is still the best solution anyway.

Canon state that in body IS is useless for long focal lengths. The movement required for a long lens could be up to 8mm in all directions. To be honest i'd prefer it to stay in lens as it is calibrated for each lens rather than a work for all approach.

As for the rumours of 7d 40d etc, the most likely replacements are for the 30D and the 1Ds (expensive one). Some are stating the 5D and 1D Mark IIn are gettting replaced, but these seem more likely in September.

Anyway the 1/5/30 isn't suddenly going to be ****e if its replaced!

Apparantly Canon dealers will know on the 23rd Feb what kit is available for the first half of the year. So hopefully we'll find out soon enough.

I'm currently Olympus 4/3 (E-330 and E-500), the rumours are they're going to offer a new prosumer body with IS and Liveview as well as an E-1 replacement with these features. Irritatingly there's only been one 4/3 lens with IS (the Leica 14-50mm) which has not been sold separately so really hoping for inbody IS so I can gain its benefits while keeping my existing lenses. One of the main disadvantages to in body IS compared to it being mounted in the lens is that you don't get a stabilised viewfinder although I don't think that's an issue.

Dunno John. I'd much prefer to see a stable image in the view finder myself. I guess it's only really noticed above 200mm though

Well, I can still frame the shot when the viewfinder image is moving - I obviously want the effect for the final picture.

Thanks! If you look at the larger version you can see some joins and edits. The back of the barge was totally wrong, but i think its not too bad now. Next time i'll take about 8-10 shots to make it a bit better.

A couple of nature shots from yesterday:

Neither are wonderfully sharp but I was doing the best with the light and lens I have.

                          And my new shoes:

Great shot to take, very interesting to do

Nice nature shots, the wildlife around me has disappeared so not much to shoot. So how did you shoot the shoes then?

So what lenses do you have then Alastair?

In my case I have decided to purchase one of these.

                              70-200mm f/4 L USM IS

I was seriously considering the 24-105 but came to the conclusion that as I already have the 17-40, I don't want to render it redundant, so will go for even more reach especially if combined with a 1.4 extender.

The fact that various web reviews have stated that it is stunning and possibly Canon's best zoom, helped of course. Next pay day = happy days.

So how did you take the shoes?

I have a Tamron 70-300 f4-5.6, it's cheap and fairly crap but I needed more reach than the 200 I already had.

You're all gits for owning that 200L by the way, wish I had the money to splash on it, especially the IS version I also wish I had a more wide angle lens too GT, I want to play with fisheye effects

The shoes were basically a home studio shot, black material background, careful lighting, long exposure and the logo is actually the shoebox in the shot, it's not PP'd in afterwards except a tiny touch of brightening. Other PP is just darkening some unwanted areas and a crop.

Was nice to envisage something and have it work out as I'd hoped.

                                And more nature here:
In it's winter plumage, so not much of a black head!!
