Hmmm, it looks like you were right.

I finished it an hour ago and... urgh.

I will post my thoughts in spoiler brackets for those those who haven't completed the game yet:

I liked, really liked chapter four where you were in a cave leading to an ancient ruins; it was slightly unexpected and had an Eternal Darkness vibe to it - does anybody else thinks so too? - where I didn't mind the drastic change in the environment, I welcomed it.

After the cut-scene where you are in a circular cavern with all the flowers surrounding the centre, I felt the game went downhill from there onwards. I liked the return of the lickers even if they felt out of place (well, it did to me anyway) and the laboratory section shows promise in the vein of believing that it was returning back to the 'old ways'.

    And how wrong am I.

The enemies (wrongly) had guns that made the game annoying, dull and frustrating for no good reason and it seems to me that every single room had some form of at least a dozen enemies to run and gun your way through before moving onto yet another enemy filled room - it got tiring and predictable.

The boss battle with Wesker is good (well, I thought it was great) and the whole Jill scenario wasn't handled too badly but it wasn't long before you were dropped onto a boat where even more enemies await; oh the joy I felt!

The big black-gooey monster was awful, tedious and rubbish. I was glad to see the back of that but the fight with Wesker was even worse, and talk about a big video-game clich? where you crash landed in a volcano. What are the chances of that, eh?

The final boss is quite frankly rubbish and the ending - although it concludes the story arch in RE5 - is a disappointment after all those Wesker related snipplets you came across in the previous Resident Evil game. It's sad to see Wesker go out in an unfittingly unspectacular style.

You know there is something not quite right when you are playing a game where you would like it to just be over and done with as soon as possible and that, unfortunately, is the way I felt during the last two chapters.

Pretty much my summary of it all. The last fight was a real "Oh just come on and lets get this over with" which is unheard of for me in a RE game.

Didn't help much that the last boss fight was absolute bobbins too.

What an absolutely crap way to get rid of a mainstay character who was such a total bas ass. While death isn't necessarily the end in the RE universe I think there's hardly much chance of him coming back from that one - I mean, that last rocket took his head clean off.

And for a series which is supposed to have put Umbrella to bed two games ago, I spent a lot of time reading and hearing about them. The series seems to be stuck in a bit of a rut - sure the story has always been nonsense of the highest order, but it's all over the shop now (and a rehash of several of its predecessors).

I wanted to love this game. It looks absolutely fantastic and there are parts which show real promise. By the time I got to chapter three I was loving it. And then it started to fall apart quite quickly. I just can't get over the fact that it's just not fun to play in parts due to some stupid AI and poor design. In many ways it feels like a step backwards rather than forwards.

What i felt was sorely lacking is displayed in this trailer from a few years back. Where there was like a 'horde' mob feel, like in Left 4 Dead.
More than likely left out since it probably didnt make it fun with an archaic control scheme.

Managed to get the overall playtime down to 1 hour and 38 minutes. Worldwide I'm ranked at position 72. Thats right boys I'm famous.

Not as famous as position 71

I agree completely. That trailer seemed to promise a turbo charged RE4. I watched it and thought more enemies would surely mean improved controls and new mobility options, otherwise how could you deal with them? Obviously, something went amiss somewhere and the dream of a worthy follow up to RE4 wasn't delivered on. Such a shame.

                  I like Resident Evil 5.

They probably had to cut it all out so that they could shoe-horn in the co-op and split-screen at some Capcom executive's request.

I still wonder how a Mikami produced RE5 would have been. Alot or at least fairly different than this game I imagine.

                        Like Dead Rising?

Mikami said himself that he wouldn't play Resident Evil 5. Fair enough, I mean his version of Resident Evil 5 would have been even better. He also said it's fine that Resident Evil 5 is similar to Resident Evil 4, but for Resident Evil 6 they will have to reinvent the series.

He half-killed my enthusiasm for RE5 when he said it isn't the game he'd make, then the demo killed the other half. Ever since then I've wished we could play his version instead and wondered what it would've been like. We'll never know.

As I'm sure I'll pick this up at some point, can someone confirm that the game is at least playable in SP mode? I watched the opening cinematic and I really liked the way it was delivered, which has peaked my interest in the game (I'm not a Resi fan at all).

If the whole game is one long escort mission however, I think I'll pass.

For me the story mode had its moments (I only played RE4 so the balls out action approach doesn't bother me), seemed like a natural progression. I hated the QTE at the time, but I'll probably look back on them fondly - they were the only time I felt anything approaching fear.

Mercs Mode has really delivered. Broke into the 300k mark co-op last night clearing all enemies from Public Assembly (including that damn chicken). Bussin

                                Jill's neckbreaker and knee drop

never gets old and I hope I can develop the icy temperament required to

                                consistently perform Weskers palm melee

. Lots still to unlock which should keep me playing for a good while yet, even if the DLC sounds a little lame...
