Its good with the DVD picture, but the subtitles look shocking, real fuzzy. Can't see any option to change the font used either.

I believe that the "double" option does just double the scale of it so you would get different sizes on a PAL & NTSC DVDs due to different resolutions. Can somebody confirm this though as I'm not sure if it does just double it?

That's with the actual tv set to 'wide' btw so it's not that. If i change the option on the ps3 from 'normal' to 'full' it eliminates the vertical borders down the side leaving just the expected horizontal borders (2.35 :1 movie) but i'm pretty sure it stretches the picture, messing with the aspect ratio...
        Any explanations or advice appreciated!
If it's a standard DVD you should try changing the resolution settings to 480p then running it ! You'll probably find you get full screen that way !

For example, using XBMC and running a dloaded avi in 720p at "original source" size you'll get a smallish window in the middle of the screen because the source material isn't high enough resolution to fill the screen.

If you want to keep the res high you'll need to let the hardware scale the picture.

Cheers Yoshi, think i've sussed it now anyway.. It appears to be a problem with non-anamorphic DVDs only. Not sure of the science cos i find all this stuff far too confusing (Is there really any need for all those settings in the PS3 menu??), but when i play a DVD that's non-anamorphic now, i just adjust the TV's setting to 'Cinema' as opposed to Wide' and it seems to stretch the picture without screwing the aspect ratio.

Out of interest, anyone know what 'Cinema Conversion' and the settings under 'BD/DVD Video Output Format (HDMI)' do, and what settings it's best to have them set to?

I think Lyris knows more about the difference between Video and Film material than I do, but it's best left to Automatic regardless.

As for the latter, you should generally leave as Auto if your TV allows it.
Basically, Games are RGB encoded, whereas DVD's and Blu-Rays are YCpCr encoded. That option allows you to force one colour encoding mode if your TV doesn't support one (HDMI 1.0 and maybe 1.1 doesn't support YCpCr).
Most TV's will support both, and thus best left to Auto to run in their native format without conversion.

              EDIT:
I did answer but though the PLAYSTATION?3 System Software User's Guide would be better to reference!

You can access that via the PS3 also!

Theme would be sweet, also hopefully Manhunt is supported as I don't fancy hooking up my PS2 and I managed to get it on the cheap again.

Lol...isn't that one of your hopes with every update announcement?

They don't usually mention adding new games now, although they do keep getting added anyway with the updates so you may finally be lucky!

The PS/PS2 setting shown above will hopefully have some interesting new stuff in it.

I do hope we can use our own wallpapers this time.

I'm quite happy with the changing background, wallpapers I always get bored with in the end and end up changing them all the time.

I'm with you on this! It'd be nice to have the choice I suppose but I'm really a fan of how "clean" everything is with the inbuilt colour fades.

                                EDIT:
Bleeders, any chance of changing the heading of this thread to something like Latest Firmware to save having to open a new thread each time one is rumoured or released?
