IGN.com had a decent roundup of all three versions of Daytona CCE. Seems the Jap version is deffo the best by far (including graphics/pop-up too)

as for fighters megamix, it was lower-res than vf2, i'd assume about the same as fv. the fv characters seemed the same, but the vf ones became a bit more chunky. it'd slow down sometimes if playing with fv characters in an fv stage (caged) what with all their effects, but i didn't notice any more slowdown present than there is with the jap fv anyway, which i own.

mind you, i've only ever plyed pal fm. i'm gonna try tracking down the jap one - seems to be going rather cheap anyway!

      sega rally is still good.

yeah, japanese fighters megamix is really cheap. i got a minty copy of it off eBay for about $2. not hard to find in excellent condition very cheap. it still has the slowdown problems you talk about though, even in the japanese one.

sega rally is still incredible. i gave it a whirl the other night. i still find it to be really, really playable!

Absolutely. It's my second favourite racer of all time (MarioKart SNES being no.1). Plays like a dream, something about the feel of it, the track design, it's just so *right*. Puts modern racers to shame.

Sega Rally is without doubt my favourite Saturn game. The biggest triumph for the game is the feel- it's just such a pleasure to play! The graphic design throughout the courses is charming and effective- and I just love the audio " Game Over Yeahhhh"

The game that shut-up the Saturn doubters!

They were selling copies of it for 20p in Gamestation a couple of years ago. It would have been the best 20p you ever spent.

One thing that startled me about Sega Rally is the fact that they managed to get digital control just so... *right*. And then when you slapped a sterring wheel in, that was also just *right*. And when you stuck a 3D pad in, you were going to be kissing the wall for hours

Wonderful, wonderful game though. Even the desert track and Stratos alone - the feeling of nailing three laps without touching the side is immense.

yeah i brought a copy of sega rally from gamestation a couple of years ago for 20p as well as worldwide soccer for 20p and vf 2 for 99p at the same time, unfortunately the influx of saturn games onto the seconhand market has dried up in the last couple of years and now your most likely to find those games between ?3 -?5

sega rally on saturn is so good, that when my mates at work all moan about wanting sega to re-release it, i just smile, safe in the knowledge that my jap version is waiting for me at home. i've got the us one, too, as i bought it before i knew how much worse it is (oh and it is!) than the uk/jap versions.

it's the game that i've had since day-one (came with my saturn, uk version that is). heck, i haven't even budged from the desert course - still trying to nail that last corner!

for me, sega rally and street fighter are probably the only games i can envisage myself playing in the future. they've just got that feel whereby i don't need to be in the mood to play them. i just can. i'll make sure my grandkids are playing them too

Sega Rally was a major part of the mid 90's 3D revolution for me. I remember visiting the NamcoWonderPark every week and there were always people feverishly racing this beauty with their mates. As soon as I sat in the seat there would be some opponent jumping in the next seat ready to challenge my skill. In this particular arcade Sega Rally was the king- though I guess Daytona ruled most arcades.

Along with Ridge Racer- Daytona and many other great 3D racers- Sega Rally personifies the fun vibrant exciting arcade experiences of the mid 90's. If I had to choose one period of gaming to be stuck in, it would have to be 95-96. I just loved the games of that period- and still do! These days we get the occasional similar feeling from a title such as Outrun2- but the glory years of pure arcade thrills seems behind us now- I still hope for a rebirth of the arcade style though!

                    Pure gaming nirvana!

where the heck can i play sega rally in one of those??? i'm in london btw. went to trocadero this week and was unimpressed (the last time i went there was when they were doing 'alien war'. i never did alien war though!). mind you, it's saving grace is that konami 'fight mania' fotns game. it was amazing. veering off-topic

totally agree with you kingston about 95-96 arcade gaming

haha, yeah. i still think that's quality. GAME OVER YEEEEEEEEEAH.

i've had the japanese version for years, but not played it for quite a while until just recently. i had another quick run on it about half-an-hour ago; as mentioned by nitebycandlelite, getting around the courses without making a mistake or touching the sides still feels immense even now. quality stuff!

Y'know, I've never really had the chance to properly play on a Saturn. Now is as good a time as any to finally get hold of one though, before all of the second hand ones disappear.

As a kid I was hooked on cutesy platformers, and I remember longing to play Clockwork Knight and Bug after seeing screenshots in a magazine. Never got round to it, but are those two games even working looking at now? If not, are there any decent Saturn platformers worth buying? And how do you even save in a Saturn game, does it have some kind of internal memory card thing or something?

I do recall having a quick go of one in Toys R Us once, but I can't remember which game. It was with the infamous UK controller which felt like ****e to hold, but it still blew me away. I loved the clunky look of that controller after seeing photos of it in magazines, and I was always dying to have a go. It looked like the Mega Drive 6-button pad on crack, which I loved.

I'll have to get Exhumed for the Saturn to plough through again, as I managed to get all of the team dolls in the PS version but was pissed off to find there was no reward

The saturn is an excellent console well worth picking up, although the games you mentionned are not that playable anymore there is much quality left in the console. The saturn is the place for the best 2D outside the neo and arcade conversions that still play well today, if your looking for a pal saturn make sure you pick up guardian heroes, saturn bomberman, parodius, sf alpha 1, and 2, kof 95, puzzle fighter, and of course sonic jam for some great platform action.

The saturn has a small amount of internal memory that will be good to save about half a dozen games on but you will soon be needing a memory cartridge which fits in the cartridge slot, this holds a heavy 4 mb and should last for a while before more are needed (if at all). And yes the saturn pad rules, its up there with the neogeo cd pad as the best for 2D games.

Although the pal sat is very good if you have enough money i would advise you to buy a jap saturn and a whole new path of excellent titles will open up for you.

if you only have to have one Saturn console try to track donw one already modified with region switch as well as 50/60Hz switch...

of coz if you are good with soldering skills you can do these mod yourself...

if you aren't too fussed about 50hz, it's possible to 60hz mod some models with nothing more than a soft pencil, or conductive pen, joining two adjacent contacts on the pcb together. It's the same two points you solder a switch to which obviously lets you switch between 50/60hz. I did this as a short term measure on a ?20 PAL saturn until i could solder a switch on.

The other model is a bit more complex and you have to cut a track on the pcb if i recall, and It might well be that this is the more common model.
