        It shows

the aliens discussing how the humans can't be ruled and are stronger than they'd imagined, pretty much surmising that they need wiping out to which we see Thanos smiling. It's very much an Avengers 2 set up

I find Dark Knight to be a hard comparison as they're like night and day, both setting out to do very different things. It's be very hard for an Avengers film to have the same story and character progression as a standard superhero film due to the balancing act required. The risk was always that at best an Avengers film would end up being a collection of action sequences with cameo's aplenty which this brilliantly manages to surpass. Within the confines of film I can't see too many ways an Avengers film could be better whereas, and this is personally taste, Dark Knight was a great story and character led film but was not so hot in embracing its Batman lineage so I can more easily see room for improvement (which funnily enough DKnight Rises looks like it could be). I'm going to be rewatching Avengers at the cinema definitely and would like to see it before I place it in my fave superhero films stakes but it's firmly in the running for best Marvel Universe film, maybe best Marvel film in general at the very least. Renewed my interest in seeing Iron Man 3 for sure

Once again, it wasn't a bad film, but as much as I wanted to love it, I just couldn't. Carzytaxinext, you make a good point about this being a different kind of film compared to Dark Knight. Dark Knight was more of a film to take seriously. I've seen most of the comic based films so I knew it was unlikely this was going to be anything new. It's just with all the rave reviews I thought this going to be something epic. It probably has most things its fans would have wanted, but it lacks the ingredients that make a really good film.

Do I need to have seen the Thor and Captain America films to see this?

I know who they are, I've just not seen their films. One guy throws a hammer around, the other one throws a shield, yeah?

The ingredients that make a really good film?

It has a brilliant script with fantastic dialogue

Great characters that the actors nail spot on.

A great story that does have some fun twists and turns despite what you say.

              Spectacular action scenes.

Joss Whedons direction is great, not only does he know the characters backwards he also knows his way around a camera. It's a very well made film.

I think it contains all the standard ingredients that make a great film (and a great superhero story) to be honest.

What the heck did you want and expect?

I would see them both first. They are the introduction to the characters and their worlds (as well as a few other characters).

The Avengers isn't so much a stand alone film as a combined sequel to the other marvel films. Plus you really need to have seen Thor to understand the villains motivations.

Loved this! Didn't know about the end credits, so missed that.

Perfect geek fest of a film, and left feeling super happy.

It was hard to care for any of the character's struggle, the bad guy seemed too weak, there were no twists or surprises, and the 1st 30 minutes were quite dull.

I'm surprised no one has already mentioned any of these issues.

Overall good film but not worthy of all the praise it has received.
                      Excellent review.

Well I thought it was flippin' excellent. Ticked all my boxes and I enjoyed it far more than oh-so-serious Batsy.

                          Neil, you're so lovely!

You know what, you can keep your vibranium-shielded super soldiers, Mj?lnir-wielding gods of thunder and armour-suited executives, you're a real hero!

I'll PM you if I can't get my hands on them in the short-term.

I'm really pleased you loved it so much, as you were really hoping you would.

Think someone might have spoiled the end of this for me on Twitter...

was there a scene right at the end with either Red Skull or Thanos?

                              There

was a scene with Thanos but it's just the post credit bit, nothing major

I still count that as spoiling a secret from the movie. Why can't people think about others who haven't seen it yet as it's only been out a few days? Thanks for the help CT, time to "unfollow" that particular individual.
