Better Valve spends its idle time and money on one off gadgets I guess than on other things like buying a major social media platform and destroying it through incompetence

My eldest is already asking me about Switch 2 which both sends a shiver down the spine of my bank account and also cements Nintendo will be nuts to do anything bar adding a '2' to the name

It will be the five stages of grief for me if it isn’t backwards compatible.

Denial. What? No way. Nintendo wouldn’t be that stupid.
Anger. **** you, Nintendo. I’m selling my Switch.
Bargaining. Maybe the Switch 2 Pro will have BC
      Depression. Nintendoomed.
      Acceptance. I’ve preordered one.

I wish I could say that will happen but more likely if they stuff that up (which they still might) then I'll happily spend more on a PC handheld that emulates switch and leave it at that.

I'm already playing their games between my switch OLED and steam deck with all my games owned digitally. If they're foolish enough to not carry them over using BC in some fashion I will find other means to play them better.

"Today we present to you our new console, building on the success of the Nintendo Switch and its ability to allow you to play your games at home and then continue with them on the go. With our new system players can continue to play their favourite titles whilst out of their home, returning the system to its dock and picking up the action on their TV screen. However, with the power that our next-generation iteration brings you can dock a smaller gamepad version of the device into the rear of the console. With the gamepads own in built controls and screen this allows owners to play dual screen titles and to share their experiences with other players when socialising in public places for multiplayer fun on the go.
Ladies and Gentlemen, we are proud to announce today...

          the Nintendo Switch U"

Which itself is a bad thing. Who can say they enjoyed trying to buy a PS5?

Can't you just keep your Switch to play Switch games, or indeed emulate them? What's the precise issue with the new machine potentially not playing Switch games?

I'd be most annoyed at the next machine not playing Switch games if I never owned a Switch and wanted to play all the games but I could never get one because I'd been a homeless crackhead until just last week.

To be honest I think it's highly unlikely that it won't be backwards compatible. CEO Furukawa said in a recent earnings call that leadership sees continuity of the Nintendo account system has key to the success of the next machine, which implies you'll be able to take your existing Switch library with you to the new console.

I'm sure 'enhanced' ports of Switch 1 games will be offered at full whack by Nintendo anyway (and will still sell).

The words ‘Nintendo account system’ doesn’t quite capture how ridiculously bad it is, especially with regards to the whole primary system thing and trying to manage games across a household of more than just one person. I don’t know if I want continuity. I want scorched Earth and a complete rebuild.

their not alone yeah they are guilty of bringing out new style play (Pikmin 1 and 2) or HD remakes (Metroid Prime) to fill out the release schedule but its not as if Sony haven't milked The Remaster Train too, Dark Souls and The last of us have done them proud. as has Microsoft with its Halo remasters.

Some of their remasters require a ridiculous amount of fan sentiment too. Like Metroid, and any potential F-Zero.

Also, yes, dump the account system and start again with something that’s good and worth investing in. The same with their netcode and servers (or lack of).

Absolutely. At this point I've no doubt it's priced into the initial budget for games that they will be able to resell them with minor upgrades again in future.

I don't disagree - just pointing out that it indicated that 'continuity with the previous platform' is probably gonna be a thing in a way that it wasn't for WiiU to Switch, or 3DS to Switch.

Especially considering we had Nintendo accounts on Wii, 3DS and WiiU.

                            I say had.

No party chat, No messaging system, Super basic Friend and gamer-tag options, it's anarchic compared to its competitors. That Nintendo is charging for a system where if you want to play online with a friend and you see them online you have no way to invite them to games or even msg them to arrange stuff inside its current eco system is bonkers.

If you think anyone uses absolutely anything other than Discord for comms you’re living in the year 2000. Headsets and party chat would be wasted resources. It’s like asking for CD playback.

Dedicated servers would be enough for me to cough up €10 per month. Just that. It’s the absolute bare minimum. Peer-to-peer networking was the main reason their online had been free all along as it doesn’t cost them anything - the difference is now we’re paying for it.
